Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on July 18, 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black man and a white mom. She grew up mostly with her mom's family. She claimed that the color of her skin was a reason why she was disregarded by her peers as a child. Her parents were struggling financially and had to move 16 times to pursue her father's job. Russell was candid about how despite all the hardships, Russell said that she was always a creative person in her early years. She hoped to be ballet dancer, then to become an artist. Russell was only 18 when she began her first acting class. She saved money from work to buy a car and drove to Los Angeles to audition. She would go back to work after her funds ran out and then resume auditioning again. This was the way she worked for four years, until she received her first TV part.
